Globus

Globus is a powerful data transfer and sharing platform that has a wide range of support for popular storage systems and a simple graphical user interface.

Below is a summary of the steps for data transfer:

To Log In

  1. Navigate to the Globus website: https://www.globus.org. If you are an ORNL employee/subcontractor choose "Oak Ridge National Laboratory" for the organization login. Then log in with your UCAMS account.

Single-sign on (SSO) may automatically log you in.*

  1. If you are not an ORNL employee, choose your own institution. If your institution does not have a Globus subscription, please contact ITSD support for assistance.

Selecting your data source

  1. Once logged in, Globus will open the File Manager page.
  2. In the source “Collection” field, enter the source endpoint where your data currently resides.

Note

These instructions assume that you’ve used the file manager panels on the upper right to select a two-pane view of “source” (left pane) and “destination” (right pane).

  1. For transferring data from NCCS Wolf2 (CADES Baseline) to the new ITSD storage system, use the source endpoint: NCCS Open DTN (Globus 5)
  2. When prompted, authenticate using your CADES Baseline credentials (this may be your UCAMS or your RATS account).

Note

SSO may do this for you.

  1. Click in the left-side “Path” box and navigate to the directory containing the files you want to transfer. The contents of the directory will appear below the Path field. The path will be /gpfs/wolf2/cades/[projid]/

    Example:

    /gpfs/wolf2/cades/gen202/

To select a destination for the data

  1. In the right-side “Collection” field, enter the destination endpoint ITSD Pathfinder Project Directories
    • Note: Pathfinder is the name of the new ITSD-managed system that will replace CADES Baseline.

  2. In the right-side “Path” box, enter or browse to the destination directory within your Pathfinder project storage where the data should be copied. The path will be /hpcl-[projid]/

    Example:

    /hpcl-gen202/

To select the data to move

  1. Select the files or folders you want to transfer by clicking on them. You can select multiple items within the same directory by holding Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Command (Mac) while clicking. If you want to transfer everything in the directory, you can select all items in the list.

Note

Globus transfers items from the directory currently displayed. If you need to transfer data from multiple unrelated directories, you will need to repeat the process for each directory.

Move the data

  1. Click the Start button to begin the transfer. This process will copy the selected files from NCCS Wolf2 (CADES Baseline) to the new ITSD Pathfinder storage.
  2. Click Activity in the left-side menu to monitor the transfer. Globus will also send you an email notification when the transfer is complete.
