Getting Started

The CADES Scalable HPC (SHPC) Condos consist of two HPC clusters: one in the ORNL Moderate protection zone (CADES Mod) and one in the ORNL Open protection zone (CADES Open). The clusters are further divided in to "condo units" based on which ORNL research groups purchased their nodes. All ORNL research and technical staff may request access to the birthright condo. The other condos are accessed only by approval from their owners.

If you are not sure what you should join, write cades-help@ornl.gov or simply start with the birthright condo.

Requesting access to CADES Open SHPC condos

First setup your UserID:

Regardless of which condo you want to join follow this step.

• ORNL STAFF: ORNL staff obtain access to CADES through their UCAMS ID by activating it in the XCAMS system.

  • To active your UCAMS ID as your XCAMS CADES user ID, visit https://xcams.ornl.gov and click on "I need an account"
  • Then, after accepting the user agreement, look in the tan box on the right of the screen under UCAMS, and click on "activate your XCAMS account" and complete the required steps

• NON-ORNL STAFF: If you are collaborating with ORNL's staff, you my get access to CADES if you have an ORNL staff host

  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, please have your ORNL host request a Service-to-ORNL PAS through their division’s PAS inputter
    • The PAS should request cyber access for CADES usage
    • When you get the PAS approved you should use the three letter ID that comes with it for your CADES ID in the instructions below
  • If you are a U.S. citizen or you are a foreign national with an active Service-to-ORNL PAS, use the following steps to gain access to CADES:
    • Visit https://xcams.ornl.gov and click on "I need an account" and complete the required steps
    • You will also need access to the external visitor login nodes, so go to https://xcams.ornl.gov/xcams/groups/cades-misc/ and follow the instructions to request an account
    • This request is reviewed and may take up to five business days for approval

Next setup your Access:

Join the Birthright condo

• Navigate to https://xcams.ornl.gov/xcams/groups/cades-birthright. The preceding link will pre-fill a request for CADES Birthright Cloud and SHPC Condo resources
• Enter your email address (use the ORNL email if available) and click continue
• Review the XCAMS user agreement, and select Agree
• Enter your USER ID (UCAMS ID if you are ORNL Staff; XCAMS ID if you are not ORNL staff)
• Enter your password
• Click Submit to complete the XCAMS request. An activation notice will be dispatched to your email address when your resources are ready for use

Join an Open Research SHPC condo owned by an ORNL research group

Find your condo on the list below. To request access to one or more of these resources, click on the link and supply the requested information. Usually, requests are reviewed within 1 business day and an email response is generated to let you know that you have access.
